John Guthmann, who recently retired from his position as a Ramsey County District Court Judge, has joined Larson • King as Of Counsel.
Following a distinguished career on the bench from 2008 to 2024, Guthmann brings a wealth of judicial experience to his new role, where he will focus on resolving disputes as a mediator, arbitrator, and court-appointed special master. He is a qualified neutral under Rule 114 of the Minnesota General Rules of Practice on the Civil Adjudicative/Evaluative roster.
When asked about his new role at Larson • King, Guthmann responded, “I look forward to working with many of the superb lawyers who appeared in front of me when I was on the bench and am excited to help parties resolve challenging legal disputes.”
During his tenure on the bench, Guthmann held several significant roles. He served as Co-Presiding Judge in Ramsey County Mental Health Court and was appointed by Minnesota’s Chief Justice to serve as Presiding Judge for Minnesota’s Asbestos Litigation from 2014-2020. Elected Chief Judge by his peers in 2016, he held the position until 2020. In 2024, he was appointed Acting Justice of the Minnesota Supreme Court for the case of MacDonald v. Simon.
Guthmann graduated from Cornell College in 1976, with a double major in history and political science. He received his JD from Mitchell Hamline School of Law in 1980 and was Editor-in-Chief of the Mitchell Hamline Law Review. After clerking for Minnesota Supreme Court Chief Justice Robert Sheran, he practiced for 27 years with the Hansen Dordell law firm before his appointment to the bench.
