Brandt was appointed by the Minnesota Supreme Court to serve as the Second District Attorney Member of the Commission. The Second District includes Ramsey County. The Commission on Judicial Selection recommends to the Governor candidates to fill judicial vacancies in Minnesota. The Commission is made up of lawyers and non-lawyers appointed by the Minnesota Supreme Court or the Governor.
